Jake Cave hits game-tying homer in the 9th, Rockies edge past Angels 5-4 in 10 innings

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Jake Cave hit a game-tying two-run home run with two outs in the ninth inning, and the Colorado Rockies capitalized on an error in the 10th to defeat the Los Angeles Angels 5-4 on Thursday night.

Cave's homer came off Hunter Strickland, who is now the closer for the Rockies after Carlos Estevez was traded to Philadelphia. "You just want to get it to the next guy and hope somebody can put a run across, but you get to a 3-1 count and you tell yourself that this is the time to get my best swing off," Cave said. "He left one center cut and that's what can happen when they get behind."

Michael Toglia also contributed with a two-run homer for the Rockies, who have now won two consecutive games following a five-game losing streak. Rockies manager Bud Black expressed his satisfaction with the win, stating, "All wins count the same, but some wins are better than others. This was a good one."

With Jacob Stallings on second base to start the 10th inning, Sam Hilliard attempted a sacrifice bunt. The Angels' Hans Crouse (4-3) threw the ball wide of first base, allowing Hillard to score the go-ahead run.

Logan O’Hoppe and Mickey Moniak hit home runs for the Angels, who have lost five of their past seven games. Right-hander Carson Fulmer gave up two runs on three hits over six innings for Los Angeles in his fourth start of the season.

Strickland, who took over as closer, has one save and one blown save. Angels manager Ron Washington commented on Strickland's performance, saying, "He just gave into that hitter, tried to get a strike over there and make him swing the bat. He got us to the point where we needed just one pitch to get out of that inning and he didn't make it."

Toglia gave the Rockies a 2-0 lead in the seventh inning with his 19th home run. The Angels tied it in the fourth inning when Willie Calhoun singled and O’Hoppe hit a home run. Moniak's home run gave the Angels a 4-3 lead in the sixth.

Colorado right-hander Ryan Feltner surrendered three runs over six innings while Victor Vodnik (3-1) pitched a scoreless ninth. Tyler Kinley secured his career-best sixth save in the 10th.

Rockies: RHP German Marquez (elbow) threw a 34-pitch bullpen session and is set for another bullpen this weekend at San Diego before his return or a minor league rehab assignment.

Angels: OF Mike Trout (knee) has been diagnosed with a second torn meniscus and will not return this season. INF Luis Rengifo (wrist) was out after aggravating an injury.

Rockies: LHP Austin Gomber (2-7, 4.79 ERA) was scheduled to start in San Diego. Angels: LHP Tyler Anderson (8-9, 2.96 ERA) was set to start in the home series against the New York Mets.
